We've seen prequels of popular Western movies before, so it's not unusual to have a prequel anime series with Goku searching for the Four Star Dragon Ball his grandfather used to have. After a dangerous stint at the World Martial Arts Tournament, he doesn't think that things could get worse for him - but they can.

There is someone out there who wants to get the Dragon balls before him, Commander Red of the Red Ribbon Army needs them if he wants to conquer the world. This box set contains some nice episodes and also The Red Ribbon Army Saga and the General Blue Saga.

You would think that from what we have seen in previous episodes, nothing can surprise us, but you would be wrong. In this series of episodes we get to see colonels, ninjas, pirates and giant pink monsters. Goku has to fight his way through them all to get his hands on his prize - the dragon balls. He does find it  hard, but here is where we see the grit and determination we have all come to know begin. Here we see where he gets his sense of humour from too, and the way he stands up to those who seek to make him look a fool when they are jealous of his fighting ability and staying power. No amount of pushing will get him to surrender to them, only his anger and willingness to survive.

There are plenty of fight scenes to enjoy and the usual good humour to look forward to in this series, but most of all is the fact we get to see the prequel story to an iconic anime character that is as unforgettable now as he was at the start.

If you liked the other two series of Dragon Ball, this will thrill you just as much.

Bonus Material: None

Verdict: Dragon Ball is action and adventure at its finest in a colourful box set collectors will be proud of.
