If fallen angels Panty and Stocking want to get back into the good graces of heaven, they have to work with naughty priest, Garterbelt to take out evil ghosts and demons. Their only problem is their apathy, but Garterbelt gives them the swift kick up the arse to get rid of the unholy menaces of Daten City.

In the first episode, the girls come face to face with a shit demon who invades unsuspecting toilet useres, sucking them in. Only they can get rid of it with their combined panties and stockings, using them as dangeroius weapons against their foes. The second part has an extreme car chase where Panty and Stocking have to get involved with a demon who can transform and take over cars and trucks, changing them into demonic machines.

Their reason for being kicked out of heaven becomes obvious after a few episodes as they are bad-mouthed and have bad attitudes to boot. This is a so wrong version of Ghostbusters with two girls and a dog called Chuck who looks nothing like a dog should. The intro is really annoying, but don't let that put you off the anime. It's one of those that grows on you after a while with its Hanna Barbera action feel, and street art animation style. The street style adds to the foul language, gross scenes and outrageous comedy in an Americanisation cartoon version of an anime. The style might not be to everyone's taste and have the standard anime look that we're used to seeing, but it is when Panty and Stocking change for battle, turning into raunchy anime girls who are packing a load of power.


Panty and Stocking are also nymphomanicas, which isn't good when they are supposed to be divine. They like nothing more than sweet things and jumping on sexy guys, except when demons show their ugly faces - then they strike fast. Gainax is the studio that brought us FLCL, and we know how madcap that anime was, and this one takes it up to the next level. As this has recently become a Blu-ray offering, there are some good points about this anime that are worth mentioning. The lines are clearer, the colours are less bright than in the DVD version, and there are some noticable improvements in the general look of the series. Panty and Stocking with Garter Belt is available on DVD and Blu-ray and comes with some seriously good extras.
