Guy Bass has brought us plenty of comical novels so its no surprise that he is the Blue Peter Award-winning author of Aiden Abet Teacher's Pet and Noah Scape Cant Stop Repeating Himself. In Laura Norder Sheriff of Butts Canyon ten-year-old Laura is the self-appointed sheriff of the town who keeps the peace no matter which bad apple rolls into it until Duncan Disorderly comes their way and does his best to cause trouble.

Laura's time as sheriff started when she took down Ten-Gun Dan the outlaw who had the reputation for being "meaner than a drunken dentist," but Laura knows a secret he's been hiding from his men.

Guy Bass I noticed from his earlier work has a top-notch sense of humour and so far this is one of his best with characters like the very dirty Walter Spitty, Tad Tipsy the barman, Mort. L Coil the undertaker, Doc Knitwell the doctor, Snippy Clipper the barber and Portly Poundcake the mayor, Laura never has a dull moment.

And the funny names don't stop there(which I'm glad about) as they, like the humour are faster as you get in this novel. Steve May's cover art is perfect for the feel of the novel as Laura makes her dad proud that she keeps the citizens of Butts Canyon safe using the golden rules which she has a whole bunch of ready for when a potential no good villain comes into town.

Laura's dad earlier on came across as a bit snivelly but her hard as nails attitude has got her dad thinking she's got the idea of being a sheriff all wrong. My love of Wild West movies and similar old TV series made this a fun take on John Wayne movies, Blazing Saddles and High Chaparral. It's the perfect introduction to what would have happened back in the day but way funnier.
