If you are on a diet this book will drive you crazy. Mc Tavish the rescue dog hopes Pa Peachy is doing the right thing when he decides to cook for the Peachy family after moaning about Betty buying a loaf of bread from a supermarket rather than baking it herself.

Pa Peachy realises how hard it is making bread so takes it on himself to be the main baker in the family. Soin Pa Peachy Bakes Again (chapter 3) there is a problem. Pa Peachy's bread is too chewy and Mc Tavish has to do something about it!

The rest of the family are annoyed at having to eat their way through Pa Peachy's failed attempts at baking to keep him happy, Mc Tavish has had to eat his way through the leftovers but things get much worse when Pa Peachy decides to enter a bake-off competition where the prize is £500 for the winner. Pa Peachy is working on plans for a replica of a grand palace even though his family think it is too big a job for him.

I am hoping that Meg Rosoff's other McTavish novels are as good as this and as fun and exciting. Pa Peachy is a typical bungling dad who has a yearning to do right by his family in all the wrong ways, though he realises he has taken on too big a project to handle on his own. The main problem is he is the worst baker ever even though Ma Peachy wants to have faith in him to do well. As endings go this one wasn't obvious and leaves scope for another entertaining sequel.
