Just when you thought you couldn't find another mecha anime series, Darling in the Franxx comes along to tempt. In a future world where klaxosaurs are the main enemy, hell-bent on ravaging humankind, children are the only hope to take them out of the warring they have endured for so many years.
They combat klaxosaurs and whatever else comes their way in combat suits called FRANXX, and Hiro has his work cut out to stay alive when he is partnered with Zero Two, a girl who so far in a battle has never had anyone live beyond three battles.
Many viewers might find it unusual that there are only 12 episodes in this first series set as opposed to the usual 13, but this doesn't change the fact that this is a series many may also either love or hate due to it being a strange anime; while many mecha series aren't as weird, this one has good characters, a decent plot and evil antagonists that threaten the human population in a world where children are left to bring order when adults aren't around - rules and regulations form the basis for their culture and learning. Despite this, they know very little about the klaxosaurs they fight against, so they have to be careful.
Hiro's life changed the moment he met Zero Two, the girl who sports horns and gives him a kiss and calls him darling. The story is mainly about the two characters and how they interact and find meaning in this troublesome world. The animation style reminded me of Towa no Quon, namely Zero Two's look of Quon when suited-up impressed me as both stories are strong and about people who survive under dangerous circumstances.
Hiro might be the one most will be drawn to, but Zero Two has a lot going for her in attitude and emotional quality, she strives to make her Hiro a hero even if he might not need any coaxing. The landscape of the anime is as strange as most with several different worlds seeming to meet in the middle and not making much sense in being all part of the same universe, but as with the other anime which are similar, we seem to accept it and enjoy the anime for what it is, entertaining, fun and at times emotional. Stay tuned for part two.
