For someone who grew up with some of the anime that was raved about in the 80s and 90s, this is one I missed out on. Now that I've seen it, I can understand what other fans saw in it. 

There are plenty of fans who loved it and would advise new fans of anime to see what it is about Japanese animation that makes it so watchable, and Mecha is a large section of anime already out there and appreciated by many.

Part 1 has episodes 1-36 of the series where an alien vessel crashes on Earth. When it is found, they use its metal to create a warship of their own (SDF-1) should the aliens return to finish the job of killing them off.

Macross has some memorable characters with Rick Hunter as the main protagonist acting as a trainee pilot, he becomes much more, ending up as an Admiral leading Earth's liberation against the Zentradi aliens who crash-landed before. Rick has his own squadron, with two guys, Max and Ben who are his trusted right hands while on the SDF-1 he served with some officers he didn't like, Lisa Hayes, being one of them, while Lin Minmei is the main love of his life. Robotech is popular for having the right amount of battles, romance and clashes of personality. One of the most interesting parts of the series is Max and Miriya becoming the first Human and Zentradi marriage, leading to a future understanding of both their races.
