After Tohru's mother dies in a car accident, she has to go live with her grandfather, though other problems living there forced her to leave their care and live in a tent on her own! Noticing she is a girl on her own urges the Souma clan living on the grounds she has pitched her tent to want to help her out, yet what she doesn't know is that the Souma's have a secret she finds out the hard way.

As her popular classmate, Yuki is a Sohma too, she is encouraged to come live with them, though when Tohru does, she meets the angry Kyo who has a terrible rivalry with Yuki who constantly fight whenever they are around each other. When she sees them at their worst, she hugs Kyo and watches in horror as he turns into an orange cat right before her eyes!

The explanation goes that all the family have been cursed to become members of the Chinese zodiac whenever they are nervous, anxious or touched, but no one else knows why this is. Now that their secret is out, they have to make her promise she won't tell a soul - or they will never be able to live this down.

A strong part of the story is the uncovering of why Yuki and Kyo don't get on, that they are opposites of the zodiac, the cat and the rat part of Yuki resents Kyo's cat side as he would have been a part of the zodiac if he hadn't missed the induction party. Tohru gets on well with Yuki, but also tries to see Kyo's side of the story even if Yuki might resent her for it. For both of them, there is a strong element of trust they put in Tohru as she uncovers their past secrets through the series.

A surprising part of the manga was how there were adult themes entangled in this story, some very cruel reveals involving certain characters that surprised even me. Fruits Basket is an anime that has tragedy, comedy and some sweet moments that an otaku like me can enjoy and warm to.

Bonus Material: The LE comes with three art cards, a paperweight stand, two paperweights, a charm bracelet and two charms!

Summary: Fruits Basket was perfect as a manga, it's now the perfect shojo anime with a real family feel!
