Barbarous Bertha is the guardian of several islands with her daughter, Molly Rogers, who she taught everything she knows about looking after the wildlife there and seeing-off the pesky sharks and other not so nice wildlife that can terrorise the island called the Purple Shell Islands.
A rescue attempt on drifters means her mum and her will have some work to do as Toothpick the monkey and friends have to tell them that his place on Monkey Skull Island is under threat of destruction as the evil pirate, Redbeard and his men have taken it over. We soon get to the bottom of why they are digging up the island; a certain pirates treasure is said to be there and Firebeard wants it!
Cornelia's novel is perfect for children to read as it is educational and the story has a message: dint destroy an island for monetary gain. The issues of conservation and wildlife protection are steeped in this story but there is a lot of fun in it too.
Molly and her friends are endearing (for pirates) as they help maintain the island and keep enemies away rather than pillage and plunder as the pirates of old did.
Molly Rogers to the Rescue comes with good humour, a page full of pirate jokes, a very special "this book belongs to" section early on for you to write your name and the name of a parent or friend you want to read with as well as some cute illustrations from artist Kasia Matykaszek to tickle your crossbones.
