Satoru Mikami thinks his life is fine; he has a steady job in a normal company, his friends all have what he calls normal lives, yet there is one thing they have he doesn't - a girlfriend!

Finding a girlfriend is what has eluded him this whole time, and now he's reached middle age, he wouldn't mind something going right for him for a change, though what happens next irks him. One day while out with his friend; who introduces his fiancee to him, a man rushes toward him for no good reason and stabs him. While his friend is busy trying to get help, Mikami lays there, slowly dying.

He expects his death to be quiet, but he hears voices above, ones he didn't expect to hear and wishes they would shut up. When he rouses, he finds he isn't in heaven with all the other newly deceased, instead he finds he has been reincarnated as a gloop of slime.

What I first noticed about this anime was how close a resemblance to Okarin from Stein's;Gate Mikami looks in the first episode of this series, the second thing I spotted was how unusual it is too; Mikami has been reincarnated as a blue slime who only has the power to jump around and swallow objects, but this is only the start of his process which acts as sort of an evolution for him, from slime to intelligent life-form and every time he swallows something, he gets special powers that help him evolve to the next level.

On his way, Mikami is helped by a mysterious dragon who tells him he will grant him further powers if he doesn't get scared by him - and a new name. He is the Storm Dragon Verudora and names him Rimoru Tempest, but with this also comes the fun part; Mikami, now Rimoru can accomplish all the things he couldn't do when he was human and he's a lot of catching up to do, starting with getting the girl.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as A Slime: Season One Part One is a fantasy adventure with a difference, part of the way through Mikami/Rimoru's reincarnation, he thinks he is in a computer game as most of what happens to him is the equivalent of power-ups or collecting counters to get further on in the game. He does evolve, quite humorously into the sort of character who you might imagine would get the girl. What he doesn't realise is that he has met the Storm Dragon, removed his seal and any kind of mayhem could happen once he is left on his own. Verudora's destruction of a village is seen in the first part of episode 1, and he explains this away as a mistake on his part when he tells Mikami/Rimoru about the incident.

Mikami/Rimoru also reminded me of the tofu from game Resident Evil and can be just as funny a character depending on whether adventure fantasy anime are your thing. They are mine as I had just enjoyed reviewing Overlord III Season 3 a bit back and enjoyed both the story and the characters. That Time I Got Reincarnated as A Slime: Season One Part One shows Mikami/Rimoru's difficult journey from nobody slime to gaining powers and abilities, being named and going on lots of journeys to find himself and get the girl.

Bonus Material: None.

Summary: If Overlord struck a chord with viewers, That Time I Got Reincarnated as A Slime: Season One Part One will notch it up one with this being one of the unexpected hits of 2019!
