In a digital age, people often ask if we could survive a day without our mobile phones; an eccentric entrepreneur challenges a school's year group to do without their smartphones for six weeks in an experiment that could be worth £1,000.

Most young people find it hard not looking at their smartphones for more than an hour at least but Esther who is part of the year group selected to do the experiment she has to stay away from her phone for six weeks. Esther finds this hard as all her photos are on there, her social media circle, friends and connection to her dad. What keeps her motivated to succeed is the thought that winning the cash will net her a plane ticket to visit her dad in New York with her mum.

For Esther, the disconnect is a means to an end as her dad split up with her mum and made a life for himself back in New York. Esther misses him and her sister as she only gets to chat to him on her phone, so for her, it would mean a lot to be able to see him. Esther doesn't like the idea of not seeing her phone for six weeks any more than her friends but she has the advantage of it being special to her rather than a chore. Her only problem is her friends who one by one start to drop out of being part of the experiment. Will Esther be able to resist the temptation to look at their phones or will she last till the end of the six weeks?

When I saw the blurb for this book I just had to see what would happen with Esther despite all the peer pressure she would have to endure. The Disconnect is a thicker book than I would have expected but that meant more story and character development to enjoy and the end result tugs at the heartstrings too.
