You might remember I reviewed Nellie Choc-Ice and the Plastic Island, which was part of Jeremy's Little Gems series of novels which educate young readers on current issues of climate change and overuse of plastics in society.

Captain Whiskers is about Jackson who feels left out when everyone in his class has a pet, but he doesn't. He has a brother, Freddie, but it's not the same. His loneliness stops when he meets a top-hatted man who has a cat, Mrs Wilson. He would love a cat, though is surprised when the man says he can have some of his-he's got a hundred!

When Mrs Wilson and the other ninety-nine cats descend on Jackson's house, his parents don't approve, they want the cats to leave, but when Mrs Wilson tells him to leave the problem with her, she comes up with a novel solution that could win them over.

Captain Whiskers is a light-hearted tale of how a cat can help a boy open up and become confident enough to get along with other children at school. The cats in the story are amazing and the illustrations by Matt Robertson complement the text. With a spot the difference in the inside cover, this is an exciting novel with a special ending. Who is the Man with the Top Hat? Read it and find out!
