What do a field trip, a strange pickle and the class of McQuarrie High School have in common? This new novel that is the last chapter in the series, not to worry, though there are loads of books in this series to read if you haven't already done so. The Origami Rebel Alliance(Tommy, Remi, Dwight, Cassie) get out to Washington DC on their field trip as a prize for defeating the FunTime Menace. There is only one snag, Principle Rabbski has decided in her wit and wisdom to ban any of the class from doing origami.
The fun is only stopped for a short while until Dwight and Harvey bring their own snacks they can turn into origami without being stopped by the principle. There are other rules, as Tommy points out, no cell phones, digital cameras, hugs, sodas, orange-coloured snacks, drinks or peanuts, but the no origami rule has them beat - almost. Things also get bad when Harvey plans to bring his Kirigami General Grievous, but the principle puts in place a new no Kirigami rule too!
For the class, it is a boring start to the day on their field trip bus, though Harvey pulls out a new more sinister puppet to the horror of all Dwight's friends, one with a smelly pickle for a face. Everyone can smell it and what makes it worse is how it looks so like one Emperor Palpatine from the Star Wars movies. Dubbing it Emperor Pickletine, there is only one remedy for the smell and Harvey's interference with the force and it is Dwight as his other classmates hope he has brought his Origami Yoda puppet along for the ride - he didn't, but he did bring lime Fruit Roll-Ups for making into a Fruitigami Yoda. The only Jedi around who can take on the dark force power of Emperor Pickletine's Pickle Powers.
For eager children and parents there are lots of bonuses to this Origami Yoda book, trading cards that consist of Fruitigami Yoda, Emperor Pickletine, General Cheesy-us and Bubble Fett. There are two bonus origami folds of Emperor Pickletine and Flying Darth Vader. I took a look at the instructions for the Flying Darth, wondering whether to use A5 paper or the perfect square paper so much used in origami books. I tried both and soon worked out that the A5 version worked good enough. I got my folds as neat as possible and decorated it as suggested. I was eager to send him on a test flight and happy to report he flew across the room landing near my manga collection. For me, the white paper test version wasn't enough, I grabbed my black paper and got started, using my white watercolour pencil to decorate it and make it a bit more Darth.
What I thought more surprising was how Emperor Pickletine could look menacing once the pickle and pieces of red candy were added. The foil lightening also added a cool touch to such a naughty pickle and Harvey as a bad boy wielder.
