Some children don't fit in at school. Dylan is the type of lad who would have had a bright future if he could only control his temper. One day he is expelled from school for punching another pupil.
At this point, his mother is at her wit's end. If Dylan isn't at school, she can't go to work, so she has to go to her father's place in the country, hoping the retreat will sort out Dylan's troubled mind.

Dylan's mum doesn't get on with her dad, but they try to get along for Dylan's sake, and what happens is exciting to read. Swan Song is the lead title for February 2021 by award-winning author Gill Lewis whose novels Run Wild and Eagle Warrior is about conservation and the beauty of the countryside. In one way, grandad's place is a shock to Dylan; he has no TV, no internet connection and his X- Box is broken after a fit of temper at being expelled. However, when you see life from his grandad's view, there is so much beauty outside, he doesn't need a TV.

At first, Dylan doesn't understand his grandad's interest in nature until he goes fishing with him and he realises what all the fuss is about

Gill slowly lets readers watch as Dylan prospers in his new life away from the confines of school, he is being home tutored and his temper calms from his introduction to nature; his friendship with Elsie, the choirmaster's daughter, his grandad, and the underlying fear that the swans in the area might die if they aren't looked after.

Swan Song sees Dylan's anger disappear while he adjusts to a new life steeped in the wonders of the great outdoors. I almost felt like I was experiencing the same things Dylan was.
