The adventures of Luffy and co. continue with the conclusion of the Impel Down Arc and our first foray into the Marineford Arc with Luffy and his new friends; Crocodile, Jinbei and Buggy at Impel Down trying to get to Ace before he can be executed.
Head warden Magellan is adamant Ace will be executed, but as we all know, Luffy is the sort of guy who doesn't let his friends, let alone his own kin down, he has his devil fruit powers, but even they might not be enough to deter his enemies.
What amazed me was Blackbeard's betrayal and act of handing over Ace to the Navy - it's a cruel and cheap trick to be sure, but one he might live to regret if Luffy has anything to do with it. The seven warlords and five navy admirals are all waiting for the outcome at Marineford where Whitebeard's commander and Luffy's brother Ace will fight it out.
Just like Ichigo has to go through several foes in the earlier seasons of Bleach, Luffy has to fight Vice Warden Hanya only to find Warden Magellan waiting for him when he least expects it. Luffy should run and hide, but he shows his stubborn side (one of his better traits other than his sense of humour) in the face of these enemies, his devil fruit power is put to great use in the first of many tough battles I found to be useful in showing his more serious, yet darker side.
Before Luffy had only to help rescue his friends, now he has to break out his brother from prison, which as we find out is a tough ask. As in a fighting game, Luffy has to fight his way up several levels to get to his brother and his enemies get stronger the further he goes, Blackbeard being the strongest and the darker enemy of the season. His attitude and great powers only anger Luffy further though, but it is Blackbeard telling him he beat up his brother in a fight years ago that is the final straw for the Straw Hat pirate.
There are several reasons for fans to keep watching in this uncut collection; one being the new characters, the sheer sight of Luffy fighting against Hanya is fun enough to enjoy, but equally funny is the sight of Captain Buggy and his men peeing in line when they haven't been able to before. Sharkface is a useful ally as he knows how determined Luffy is to follow through with his plan of rescuing his brother; Luffy's determination is admirable, but not at the risk of nearly killing Sharkface. As we see, it is only his few choice words that stop Luffy from going on the rampage, but it's enough to get him back on track with his objective.
One of the reasons for watching One Piece is for its unusual characters, which it has in abundance; Sharkface, Magellan and Blackbeard may not be the most strange but they do look odder than most. I never even knew there was a wax wax fruit anyone could get power from, but this series only goes on to prove how fun and inspiring it is.
Bonus Material: Episode 449 Commentary, Episode 452 Commentary, Usopp the Sniper King, Episode 462 Commentary, Robins Search, Episode 468 Commentary, Textless Opening and Closing Songs and Trailers for other anime series.
Summary: Luffy's at his most powerful in this, the latest and greatest series so far!
